A sudden change, which is illness rather than aging

Aging is slow. Anything that arrived in days is a new illness wearing the costume of old age, and it needs diagnosing.

Short answer: This is not a home-care situation. A sudden change, which is illness rather than aging needs a veterinary assessment rather than a natural remedy, and we deliberately do not suggest one for it. Seizures, collapse, or loss of consciousness.

Our honest read: this one is a veterinary job first. Anything below is supportive at best, and it should not delay an appointment.

What this tends to look like

  • A clear before and after, often to within a day or two
  • Suddenly much quieter, weaker, or unwilling to move
  • Sometimes disoriented, circling, tilting the head, or unsteady on the feet
  • May be breathing faster at rest, or panting without reason
  • Occasionally an abrupt change in appetite or thirst
  • Frequently the household explanation is that they have aged overnight, which does not happen

What is usually going on

Aging is a process measured in seasons. It does not happen in a week. When an older animal changes over days, something specific has happened, and the reason this matters is that older animals get diagnosable, treatable illnesses, and those illnesses look like decline. Hyperthyroidism and kidney disease in cats, Cushing's disease and hypothyroidism in dogs, heart failure, anemia, diabetes, pain from a fractured tooth or a swollen joint, and vestibular disease all present as an animal who has suddenly become old.

Vestibular disease deserves a specific mention because it frightens people badly and is often mistaken for a stroke. A sudden head tilt, unsteadiness, and flicking eye movements in an older dog is most commonly idiopathic vestibular syndrome, which looks dramatic and usually improves substantially over one to three weeks with supportive care. Knowing that changes how the next fortnight goes, but you only get to know it by having them examined.

We are not offering a remedy on this page, and it would be poor advice to do so. Joint supplements, omega-3 and milk thistle are for slow support of a slow process. Nothing on this site is appropriate as a first response to a change that happened this week, and the animal deserves a diagnosis before anything else.

What you can do at home

  • Book an appointment now rather than watching for a few more days
  • Write down exactly when you first noticed and what specifically is different. Vets rely on that timeline
  • Note water intake, appetite, urination and stools over the last week, as precisely as you can
  • Film any unsteadiness, circling, head tilt or odd movement. It is enormously more useful than a description
  • List every medication and supplement they are on, including anything natural
  • Keep them confined and safe. An unsteady animal falls down stairs and off furniture

What progress should look like

How long to give this before you conclude it is not working.

  • Today or tomorrowExamination and probably bloods and urine. That is the whole recommendation.
  • At the visitAsk specifically about thyroid and kidney tests in a cat, and blood pressure in either species.
  • One to three weeksIf it is vestibular disease, expect substantial improvement over this window with supportive care.
  • Once diagnosedThen the slower support patterns on this page become appropriate, and you can use them properly.

When to stop and call your vet

  • Seizures, collapse, or loss of consciousness
  • Fast or labored breathing at rest
  • Pale or yellow gums
  • Complete refusal of food or water, which in a cat is a 24-hour matter
