Symptom guide · Senior & Cognitive Support
Genuinely slowing down over months
Shorter walks, more sleep, less play, developing over months. Most of this is joints and muscle rather than age itself.
Short answer: The natural remedies most commonly used for dogs and cats with this pattern of senior & cognitive support are Omega-3 fish oil, Glucosamine + green-lipped mussel and Milk thistle. They suit mild, everyday cases in an otherwise healthy animal, and the page below sets out the point at which this stops being a home-care problem.
What this tends to look like
- Walks are shorter, or they turn for home sooner than they used to
- Sleeping more, and more deeply, often in a favorite spot rather than following you around
- Less interested in play, or plays in shorter bursts
- Slower getting up from lying down, and stiffer first thing in the morning
- Reluctant on stairs, or no longer jumping onto furniture
- Visible loss of muscle over the back legs and along the spine
What is usually going on
The single most useful reframe here is that most of what looks like general aging is specifically pain and muscle loss, and both are more addressable than people expect. Radiographic surveys find degenerative joint disease in the large majority of cats and dogs past middle age, while only a small fraction are ever presented for it, because animals with arthritis do not usually limp. They simply do less. An animal doing less has often already concluded that a movement is not worth what it costs, and that conclusion generally follows months of discomfort.
It is also self-reinforcing. Less movement means less muscle, less muscle means more load through worn joints, and more load means less movement still. Breaking that loop is where the real gains are, and it is done with consistent moderate daily exercise rather than rest, with weight control, and often with pain relief that owners do not think to ask for. Weight is the biggest single lever: controlled studies in arthritic dogs have shown measurable improvement in lameness from weight loss alone.
Supplements are worth an honest ranking. Omega-3 fish oil has the most reasonable evidence base of anything on this page and is the one we would start with. Glucosamine and green-lipped mussel have weaker and more mixed evidence. None of them approach prescription pain relief in effect, and a senior animal that is slowing down deserves a proper conversation about that before it deserves a supplement cupboard. Used alongside weight control and steady exercise, they are a reasonable addition. Used instead, they are a way of feeling helpful.

What you can do at home
- Keep exercise little, often and consistent. Two or three short walks daily beats one long one and beats a weekend hike considerably
- Get the weight right. Ask for a target and a measured ration. This outperforms everything else on this page
- Non-slip mats on smooth floors, and a ramp or step to the car, the sofa and the bed
- Thick warm bedding out of drafts, and more than one bed so they are not choosing between comfort and company
- Keep nails short. Long nails change how the foot lands and make everything above it worse
- Ask your vet about pain relief and about a six-monthly senior check with bloods. Both are underused
What progress should look like
How long to give this before you conclude it is not working.
- First two weeksFlooring, bedding, ramps, and consistent walk lengths. These change comfort faster than anything you swallow.
- Four to six weeksEarliest point at which omega-3 could reasonably show anything. Judge it no sooner.
- Eight to twelve weeksGlucosamine-type supplements need this long. If nothing has changed by then, stop paying for them.
- Every six monthsA senior check with bloods and a weight. Slow decline is much easier to interpret against records.
When to stop and call your vet
- Any sudden worsening, which is illness rather than progression
- Increased thirst, weight loss, or a change in appetite
- Panting at rest, restlessness at night, or yelping, which are pain signs
- One leg becoming clearly worse than the others, or visible muscle loss on one side only
Not quite what you are seeing?
These are the other patterns we cover for senior & cognitive support.
- A sudden change, which is illness rather than agingAging is slow. Anything that arrived in days is a new illness wearing the costume of old age, and it needs diagnosing.
- Confusion, or restlessness at nightStaring, getting stuck, pacing at night, or calling out in the dark. There is more that can be done about this than most owners are told.
- Sight or hearing goingAnimals adapt to gradual sensory loss remarkably well. Most of the work is yours, and most of it is arranging the house.
- Toileting accidents in an older animalLosing house-training late in life is usually physical rather than cognitive, and a urine test answers most of it.
