Symptom guide · Stress Marking & Spraying

Spraying at windows and doors because of cats outside

Territorial spraying aimed at the boundary. Block the sightlines and the reason to spray largely disappears.

Short answer: The natural remedies most commonly used for cats with this pattern of stress marking & spraying are Pulsatilla, Gelsemium and Calming herbs (chamomile, valerian, L-theanine). They suit mild, everyday cases in an otherwise healthy animal, and the page below sets out the point at which this stops being a home-care problem.

What this tends to look like

  • Standing, tail quivering, small amounts on a vertical surface
  • Concentrated at windows, doors, the cat flap, or the wall beside them
  • Often preceded by staring out of a window, or chattering and growling at it
  • Sometimes worse at dusk and dawn, when other cats are most active
  • May be worse in spring and summer
  • Otherwise completely normal in the house, using the box reliably

What is usually going on

Spraying is a message rather than a mistake, and a cat spraying at doors and windows is responding to another cat it can see, smell or hear at the boundary of what it considers its territory. From the cat's point of view this is a proportionate response to an intruder. That is why punishment achieves nothing and why calming products alone rarely resolve it: the cat is not confused, it is responding to something real.

The intervention that works is to remove the trigger from the cat's perception. Frosted film on the lower part of the relevant windows is remarkably effective and cheap. Blocking access to the sill, closing curtains at dusk, and removing anything that lets the neighborhood cats sit and stare in makes a measurable difference. If there is a cat flap, a microchip flap that only your cat can open removes both the intrusion and the anxiety about it, and it is one of the better investments in this situation.

The second half is making the inside of the house feel securely owned. Cats mark by rubbing and scratching as well as by spraying, and giving plenty of opportunity for the first two reduces the need for the third. Scratching posts near the doors and windows in question, high resting places with a good view, and cleaning sprayed spots thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner so old marks do not invite fresh ones, all pull in the same direction.

What you can do at home

  • Frosted window film on the lower half of the windows they spray at. Cheap, reversible, and the single most effective step
  • Block access to the sills involved, and close curtains at dusk and dawn
  • Fit a microchip cat flap if there is a flap, so no other cat can come through it
  • Discourage cats from the garden near those windows, and remove anything they can sit on to look in
  • Put a scratching post beside each sprayed area. Scratching is marking too, and it is marking you can live with
  • Clean every sprayed spot with an enzymatic cleaner. Old marks are an invitation to re-mark

What progress should look like

How long to give this before you conclude it is not working.

  • First weekFilm on the windows, sills blocked, everything cleaned enzymatically. Do it all at once.
  • Two to three weeksSpraying frequency should be clearly lower. Count incidents per week rather than judging by feel.
  • Four to eight weeksMost sightline-driven spraying is substantially resolved by here.
  • If it continuesAsk your vet about referral to a behaviorist, and about medication. Both help in established cases.

When to stop and call your vet

  • Any straining, blood, or crying while urinating
  • Squatting and passing normal volumes as well, which changes the picture
  • Spraying spreading to beds and laundry, which points at conflict inside the house instead
  • No reduction at all after two months of consistent management
